Ernul is a community in northeastern Craven County. A post office was established there in 1884, which was discontinued in 1902 then reestablished in 1919 and is currently (2010) in use. The community was named for Freeman Ernul, a farmer “largely instrumental in getting it [i.e. the post office] established.”
